Munich Symphony Orchestra

The Munich Symphony is one of Munich's four Symphony Orchestras. In September 1945 a young conductor, Kurt Graunke, gathered together musicians to give a charity concert in aid of the Bavarian Red Cross in the war-torn ruins of Munich. The first live radio broadcasts and the first subscription concert series in post war Munich was soon to follow. This was the beginning of the success story of the present day Munich Symphony who take pride in having been named the "sound of our city".

The orchestra performs around 100 concerts each year, including 3 subscription series of symphonic music just in Munich. Successful guest appearances outside Munich have included tours within Germany, Europe, Asia and USA.

Flexibility, the ability to adapt to all forms of music without inhibitions and always being prepared to take on new challenges has shaped the character of the orchestra since it's humble beginnings. These qualities enable the orchestra to accompany stars and soloists such as Placido Domingo, Mischa Maisky, Elena Garanca and Nicole Cabell. The Orchestra has also been successful in other fields, such as musical, TV shows and film music scores ( "Silence of the Lambs").

The renowned pianist Philippe Entremont, has been principle guest and honorary conductor for many years. Principle conductor is Georg Schmöhe who has been with the orchestra since the season 2006/ 2007 and is concentrating on widening the symphonic repertoire.
During the season 2008/ 2009 the orchestra will be supporting talented young musicians from the Anne-Sophie Mutter foundation. The highlight of the concert season this year is a five week tour of the USA including concerts in Los Angeles and Las Vegas.
